The challenge
The Municipality of Amsterdam wanted to understand which types of traffic situations are potentially dangerous as the city transitions to a new speed limit.
The research focused on driving school teachers and driver examiners as they are on the front lines, navigating novice drivers through the city. We focused on 4 questions:
- Which traffic situations (where) are most dangerous? Why?
- How do novice drivers react to challenging traffic situations?
- What actions are essential for safe navigation in these situations?
- How will the new speed limit help or hurt these situations?
The outcome
The traffic team used the insights and many ideas from driving instructors to decide whereto improve signage or flows throughout Amsterdam. An added bonus was the extra idea to use driving instructors as a resource for safety by:
- Setting up a central reporting point for traffic safety issues for instructors
- Making it easy for driving instructors to submit pictures, videos and suggested solutions
- Using real-time reports to identify and address dangerous situations faster
The nitty gritty
- 3 sessions
- Driving instructors and examiners
- 5 questions about dangerous traffic situations using maps
- Deep-dive into insights and ideas to improve traffic safety
