Improving Traffic Safety in Amsterdam with Driving Instructors
What type of situations are most challenging and what solutions are there?
The Municipality of Amsterdam used the 5hellos method to better understand which types of traffic situations are potentially dangerous and why. The focus was on beginner drivers because they are the most intuitive in responding to difficult traffic situations. For this purpose, three 5hellos sessions were held with 8 driving instructors and 4 examiners.
Before the session
Prior to the session, we asked the driving instructors and examiners 5 questions about their experiences teaching in the past 3 months.
Deep-Dive
During the online conversation, the 5hellos moderator used the individual answers to delve deeper into the core questions:how difficult it is for novice drivers and what pitfalls there are? How do students behave in such situations?
The result
Rich insights and diverse ideas emerged fromthe sessions that can be used by the Municipality of Amsterdam to take measuresto improve traffic safety in Amsterdam.
One of the action suggested based on theconversations is to set up a central reporting point where driving instructors,who are on the road 24/7, can easily send photos, videos, and solutions whenthey encounter dangerous situations.
